China announced today for the first time a numerical target for reducing its emissions of greenhouse gas emissions per unit GDP by 40 to 45% compared to 2005 in 2020, ten days after the opening of the Copenhagen conference on climate, reported Xinhua.
"It is a voluntary action taken by the Chinese government according to the conditions of the country and a major contribution to global efforts to fight against climate change," said the State Council.
The Chinese announcement came a day after the White House on the arrival of U.S. President Barack Obama in Copenhagen where he will propose a 17% reduction in emissions of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States in 2020, then 30% in 2025 and 42% in 2030 compared to 2005 levels. China and U.S. are the two biggest polluters of the planet.
China has also announced that it would be represented at the Copenhagen summit by Prime Minister Wen Jiabao.
